    Posted: August 26 2011 at 1:03pm

Hey Everyone,

I thought I would introduce myself to “y’all” and get some opinions on boats at the same time. My wife and I relocated to Houston (Atascocita) 5 years ago from Canada (Nova Scotia). I’ve been surfing (real surfing) and wake boarding (behind an i/o) for most of my life but have only been out once or twice since moving to Texas. Long story short, I miss the water, recently tried wake-surfing at M2 Sports and loved it.

Therefore, I want a boat… What I’m looking for, in order of importance:
•     New or almost new, 60k limit (hopefully with a warrantee and under the limit)
•     Local dealer/specialist with a good reputation (all boats break down)
•     A very big regular side surf wave (I realize this will require aftermarket ballast, but the hull needs to have the potential)
•     Good for wakeboarding but surfing takes priority
•     Reliability
•     Comfort stuff / socializing (stereo, size, looks etc…)

Boats I’m considering:
•     Centurion Avalanche C4 (proven surf hull, 30” draft)
•     Axis A-22 (have heard mixed reviews on the surf wake d/t the platform but I like the boat overall)

Am I missing anything? Tige’s and Centurion Enzo’s are way out of my price range. I’m not planning on doing anything until the fall or winter.

I appreciate any input. Thx

The epic makes a nice surf wave. I also heard the Sanger 237 makes a nice surf wave. Malibu 247 makes a nice surf wave also but you will have to buy used to get in that price range.

Welcome to GCWA.  I also live in Atascocita (as do some of the other members).  You can make a surf wake with pretty much any V-drive.  I know that Centurions are known for their surf wake and Epic will probably make a good wave without any additional ballast.

I am new to boating/wakeboarding all together and I went with the Axis A20. I love the boat. This boat will be well within your price range even if you go with the A22 and it has great potential.

One thing, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT buy anything from Daryl Moore Marine(DM). Sorry the below is so long, but I gott get it all in there.

When I first got my AXIS A20 I had an ECM problem and the boat wouldnt run at all. I took the boat back to DM and the first thing they did was saw I had put a different battery in the boat and immediatley said I hooked the battery wrong which caused a reverse polarity issue in return blowing the ECM. Mind you, there was nothing else blown, no fuses poped, no burnt wires, nothing, just a dead ECM. They supposedly called Indmar about this and Indmar supposedly agreed with them. They said they would put a new ECM in the boat and if it did not blow immediatley then I was stuck with the bill. So thats what they did and I payed for the ECM.

Well, Im a pretty persistent guy and when I know im right or want something its going to happen, so I payed for the ECM and I told DM to ship it back to Indmar as I wanted Indmar to diagnose the problem and let them tell me they werent going to warranty it. Service manager at DM said he sent it back. I let 2 mnths go by and finally asked him what they said and he simply tells me they say its blown and thats it. I then ask him to let me speak to who he is dealing with to which he says I cant give u there number, but I give them ur email and they will contact u. I week goes by and I hear nothing. I then find Indmars customer service number and track down the guy DM was dealing with ( WHY THE HELL DIDNT I DO THIS FROM THE START BLOWS MY MIND, GUESS I JUST ASSUMED U BUY A 52,000 BOAT UR GONNA GET GOOD SERVICE). So after speaking to the gentlemen at Indmar for approx 5 min and sending him one email I was then getting my money Back. I will even include the email he sent to DM about the issue after I spoke to him.

Come to find out, after speaking with Larry at Indmar the guys at DM never even contacted him about my ECM issue nor was the bad ECM ever shipped back. I spoke to Daryl Moore him self and he assures me they did and that Indmar guy just doesnt remember. I said ok, ill give u the benefit of the doubt that Indmar just forgot about it, but where is the tracking number for the ECM that I was told was shipped back. I asked for this about 3 weeks ago and still have not gotten it from them.

Can anyone understand why they would do this? They have now Big Yellow Streamed me off and I am not taking my boat there unless I absolutley have to, like unless its a problem with the haul or electronics in the boat. I will be taking all further engine warranty to another Indmar dealer in Houston.

Another issue I had with them was I took the boat in to have a speaker problem fixed and a cup holder/vinyl issue fixed, when I picked the boat up the first time the cup holder was fixed, but the vinyl was like shoved under the cup holder and u could still see foam from the cushion around it. I had to point this out to the service manager and he had to order new vinyl which took another 2 weeks. I asked him why it was done half ass and he said Im sorry I cant catch everyhting. On the speaker issue I took it to him and I even told him the problem. According to the codes I was seeing from the AMP Wet Sounds said there was a short somewhere. When I picked the boat up he tells me they just adjusted the amp. I then took the boat on a trip and my first trip across the lake the speaker starts smelling like its burning. I later took the boat back to them for this and they tried to blame me saying the amp was turned up too high and they were the last ones to jack with the AMP.

I do not mind paying for anything when I know I mess it up. I have had some unfortunate accidents with my boat twice now where I was pulling out of my storage unit and didnt pull the roll up door all the way and caught my wake tower. I tore the bimini up and damaged the door. I didnt try to blame that on anyone I payed for it all my self. If I had thought any of the issues above were caused by my neglgence I would have done the same.

Again, I love the boat and end the end Indmar took care of me, but I honestly beleive DM is a joke and they have absolutley zero customer service. If I did it all over again I would still by the AXIS, but would go somewhere else. If I were u I would even go to DM and look at them and then by it online or out of state.

Here is even a post on another forum (sorry for posting other forums on here). This post is really old, but it sounds like DM has been screwing people over for a long time:http://www.wakeworld.com/forum/showthread.php?t=466069

Below is the email from Indmar to DM. Now if DM knows what they are doing over there would they have known this was a reverse polarity issue when I told them the boat ran for over 2 hrs. Also according to this email the alternator diodes would have been fried which they werent, the day I took the boat back they put an ECM in the boat there and the boat started right up. These guys are a joke!!

Subject: Engine 167340. Customer Brandon Miller

John have received a couple of e-mails and a phone call from Brandon Miller, a customer of yours with an Axis boat and MEFI 5B Indmar engine. Apparently he had an early ECM issue and the suspicion was that when he installed a battery that he may have reversed polarity and "let the smoke out of the ECM".

After my communicatuion with Mr. Miller, I am not convinced that his problem was caused by reverse polarity. Generally, reverse polarity kills the ECM immediately and also has a detrimental effect on other components such as the diodes in the alternator. According to Mr. Miller the boat started and ran fine for a period of time and left him stranded in open water. This is not the typical reverse polarity scenario.

In the interest of goodwill between you and your customer and Indmar, I am willing to accept a warranty claim to cover the cost of the ECM, shipping and diagnosis. If this is OK with you, I will run a claim and issue the credit to your account and you can reimburse your customer for his out of pocket expense.

I read that the 2012 A-22 will have a redesigned platform to correct the surf wave. There was a good post on WakeWorld about it.

Thanks for all of the feedback!

I will check out the Epic for sure. Seems like great value, what's the catch?

We live in Eagle Springs as well. I sent your brother a PM asking how he liked the A-20 - thinking that your boat was his! Your story is unreal, dealers should be bending over backwards to keep customers happy.

Good stuff....maybe we can get together one day before/after you buy your boat. I would like to learn to surf behind my A20. I do not own a surf board though.

Your right they should be bending over backwards...like I said theyw ill not get anymore money from me unless I have not other choice to take it there for warranty work. If there was an AXIS dealer close like within 1-2 hrs I would actually prob go that far to avoid going there.

Absolutely anytime - if it ever rains! I'm planning to purchase a board, a surf tow rope soon anyway and will bring beer/gas money. I have several standard surfboards already but its probably best to get one designed specifically for wake surfing. I would love to see the Axis in action.

Canuck Surfer

You may want to reconsider the Tige' !

You should be able to get into a Tige’ for less than 60k.

I have been boating almost all my life, relocated down here from the north about 7 years ago, purchased an I/O here and ran it for a few years. After doing 2 solid years of research (50k+ on a new boat is a lot to me), I chose a Tige'.

I sat in every boat made over a 2 year period at boat shows in Houston. I always kept coming back to the Tige's. I started talking with Brandon and Steve at Texas Tige just north of Houston for a serious purchase. I went to their dealership on the weekends and just looked and sat in boats for almost 6 months (drove my wife nuts). No pressure from them, they always said just let us know when you are ready. I think the only calls I got was them letting me know the boat I had my eye on got sold to someone else. In my opinion Brandon and Steve give excellent service and give you the respect a customer deserves after purchasing a 50k+ boat from them. Anyone who knows me knows I am VERY picky about most things and to choose Texas Tige over others says a lot coming from me!

You are right, having a good dealer for your service needs is very important, as it was very important in my book as well.  It was one of the reasons I chose Texas Tige in addition to their awesome boats. I bought my Z1 brand new in 09’. No major troubles, and for the small things, Texas Tige’ was quick to get me fixed so I wouldn’t miss one weekend on the water.

In my opinion-other dealers in the area seemed arrogant and/or would call me and give me a price and say it was only good for 3 days. Brandon and Steve treat the customer the way a customer should be treated, the second you walk in the door and that is hard to come by these days.

If you want to take a closer look at my boat or go out with us for day, let me know. And no, I do not work for Tige nor will I benefit in anyway if you purchase a boat from them. I just like to give a “shout out” where it is due! And best of all-Tige’ boats are made right here in Texas, feel free to check them out and see about scheduling a factory tour. I am way over due for my tour!

Also, feel free to post here to:

A lot of people there can answer many more questions you may have about a Tige and probably better than me since I have only been a Tige owner for a few years.

No catch - but no bling either, no touch screen, blah blah blah. Ballast, tower, boat, sound, Mercruiser GPS speed control, still push button but dead on!

I have an '07, can show you the basics and then you can be woo'd by the newer models. Then, chances are you can hop on Dave's and check out his Tige. (yes I just volunteered Dave's boat for him. We both ride the LSJ - this weekend is out for me, looks like the wind will be on it.

I know I already mentioned it, but I wanted to say thanks again for all of the good feedback.

Looks like I made an incorrect assumption that the Tige was out of my price range...

I would love to see a Tige, Epic or MB in person - on the water... I'm busy the next couple of weekends (folks visiting), I'm free just about any weekend after that and every 2nd Friday. Driving distance doesn't matter. We're still a few months away from pulling the trigger, but I would like to narrow down the search sooner than later.
